Olivier Rousteing was fascinated with ancient Egypt, Egyptian royalty such as Tutankhamen and Cleopatra, snakes, scarabs and mummies. These are the highlights from the Balmain 2023 Resort Cruise Pre-Spring Womens Collection. They are wondrous to behold.

Animalier: We started with a golden metal scarab purse with crystals. Next was the zebra striped turtleneck maxi dress. The rest of the pieces were a strapless leopard dress with crosshatched bandages, an open shoulders cheetah print gown and a quilted puffer circular outerwear coat.
Bedazzled: The ancient Egypt motif focused on dazzling adornments such as shiny metallic tiles, sequins or paillettes, spiky feathers, crystals, gemstones, beads and trinkets. The jackets and micro dresses were sculptural with cobra coils and futuristic with tiered golden bands.
Denim: Jeanswear included a layering of a denim skirt over a slouchy tucked-in jeans and a wide leg baggy destroyed/destructed design.
Mesh Hall: Long dresses were made with rope-like straps that created a mesh or a warrior netting with studs.
The Mummy: These long strings and straps produced interlocking weaves and crosshatching braids. We saw unique approaches to bandages such as mummy wraps, tiered drapery, knotted mesh, feathers and web-like threads that looked frayed and antiquated from a catacomb.
Reptilian: The asp or aspis is an Egyptian cobra. This was one of the motifs used with sculptural snakes wrapping around bodies. These were decorated with shiny tiles, metal mesh and braided ropes.
